The Chaperone

I was just reading someone else's bloggy adventures as chaperone and it brought me back in mind to my "most memorable" chaperone moment a couple years ago. Thought I'd share....

Between the French toast for breakfast and the peanut butter sandwiches for school lunches, I was working through my 2nd loaf of bread by 6:30 in the morning. My mind was busy dealing with society-fed mental stress: too many carbs for my kids. Plus, what kind of fat is in the peanut butter? Is it that bad kind everyone's talking about -- tranny? No, transparent? No, trans fat. Does peanut butter have trans-fat? Since the kids eat it with gusto, I'm guessing it's loaded with the stuff.

Bella broke my reverie by popping up beside me to remind me I'm chaperoning her field trip today. I told her, "Darlin, I keep telling you. I said I could chaperone, but I never heard from Miss R that I was selected and I never sent any money, so she must have picked a different Mom."

"But Mom", cried Bella, "she said I'm in your group."

Hold the phone. I have a GROUP? That doesn't sound like wishful thinkin, that sounds real.

A momentary surge of adrenaline jerked my head up and I assessed my reflection in the mirror before me. I was clad top to tail in my blue pajamas. The ones with the feathers all over them. Think chicken in distress. I was wearing my fuzzy brown slippers that go ksh, ksh, ksh on the floor. My uncombed hair was sprouting from a ponytail on the top of my head that resembled a Venus Fly-Trap. My unwashed face was still puffy with sleep and a schmear of peanut butter on my chin completed the look.

My mental stress took a giant leap from carbs and trans fats to how'm I gonna pull this off. I remembered my Lamaze from years gone by and decided breathing might be a good thing. After I did that for a while I moved into action. Finished getting the kids ready for school and onto the bus. Dashed off an e-mail to Miss R to verify if I was, indeed, supposed to chaperone.

I was, indeed.

I looked in my checkbook and told her I had paid for Julie and Bella but not for myself. She informed me I had paid in cash. I'm not remembering any of this.

But I showered and dressed and made myself as presentable as was possible and hurried off to school. The buses were pulling out of the parking lot when I arrived and so I fell into line behind them. I followed them down the highway to our destination, all the while frantically calling everyone I know so I can still pull off my afternoon appointment for Daniel out in Wilmington.

By the time I arrived at Longwood Gardens I can proudly say I had caused no traffic accidents by dialing and driving, but neither had I resolved my afternoon dilemma. I rushed over to Miss R to apologize for my screw-up, but as we got to talking we pieced together the puzzle. Turns out Bella, in the hopes of "surprising me", had paid my chaperone fees with her own money and then kept the confirmation paper from me. Bless her soul, I didn't know whether to strangle her or hug her.
Then with my Mommy Vision, I saw behind me Bella's best friend's Mom, who was also chaperoning. Without a shred of dignity I threw myself at the woman's feet and begged her to take my girls home with her after the field trip. She agreed, then peeled me off her legs to go round up her kids.

OK, so now the day was starting to look up. I gathered up the kids assigned to me, then met with the two other chaperones in my group. Both women were blondes with highlights and fashionable boots. Two Barbies and an "It's OK To Be Me Doll". Of the 14 fourth graders in our group, six of them were in my care. There are 350 acres at Longwood, but because it was a nasty cold drizzly day we spent most of our six hours inside. The guides were wonderful. But holy goat berries, they were trying to teach the kids how to read a map and how to measure. We actually measured the same bench 17 times. I'm not lying to you, 17 times. The kids' eyes all had that same glazed-over look you've likely noticed in road-kill.

We finally reached the end of the structured lessons and it was "free-time". Though the kids were all begging to run off to the treehouses, we decided it would be best to let the kids play in the indoor children's garden in the hopes of keeping them dry. Five minutes later more than 100 nine and ten year olds were soaking wet from playing in all the "please touch" water fountains. Whose brilliant idea was it to design those? So we threw our hands up in surrender and took them out to the treehouses, trudging through the mucky mulch and cold drizzle. As all the parents stood trembling in the rain, the kids climbed over the treehouses like termites. A couple children came to me to report one of the boys had peed over the railing. "No habla ingles" I replied.

The announcement came that it was time to load the kids on the bus, thank sweet baby Jesus. I said goodbye to my girls, then drove the 20 miles home in about 10 minutes. Picked up Daniel (and Rosie too, 'cuz she wanted to come along), then drove back out past Longwood again and on out to Wilmington. After Daniel's appointment we drove back, stopping to pick up first fast food for dinner, then the girls from their friend's house. Got home, threw burgers at everyone and told Bella to grab her skate bag and jump back in the car to get out to her ice skating lesson.

Sat in the cold. Again. Got home about 9pm and got Bella tucked in, did some laundry, then headed down to have some quality time with Fred. Quality time, of course, meaning we both stared blankly at the TV for about an hour and then crawled into bed.

I'm sure I'll be called on again in the future to be a chaperone. Today's guidelines are stricter than ever, requiring child abuse clearances, criminal record clearances, and fingerprints run and approved by the FBI. I think the next step planned in the process is retinal scans and DNA analysis. Those of us who hand all that into the school are the few, the proud. The stupid.

I just hope that the next time I'm scheduled to chaperone, I will know about it more than 30 minutes in advance.

Nice Relaxing Weekend.

Not.

My to-do list for this weekend includes:

Painting Julie's room.
Installing the headboards we made for three of the kids for Christmas.
Figuring out what to do and where to put all the bags and boxes of stuff that the kids cleaned out of their rooms weeks ago.
Taking down all the Christmas decorations and storing all that away.
Cleaning out the barn.

Oh yeah, and let's not forget about all the usual stuff of life including feeding eight people-keeping the house clean-getting after the little buggers to do their chores-laundry-and what-not. Lots and lots of what-not.

Par-tay!

It would lift my spirits if I woke up to higher numbers tomorrow morning. Please click this button to vote for me? Thanks!

Farm Friday - A Day in the Life

Yes, yes, last week I was awarded that Versatile Blogger's Award. I'm sure you must be thinking my life is all glamour and fame for me right about now.

Since glamour and fame stand on pretty subjective grounds, I'll let you be the judge. Here's my schedule from that day:

Slept in till 5:45 b/c I decided to go on strike and let the little so-n-so's fend for themselves for breakfast for a change.

By 7:30 I had gotten four kids up and driven in/dropped off to school, though two were on death's door to hear them tell it.

By 8:30 I had gathered eggs, let our farm dog out for the morning, and cleaned and filled the waterers.

By 9:30 I was showered and dressed and had my youngest starting his Friday "home"work while whisking one of the older kids off to school (in late b/c she got home late from the play she was in the night before).

By 10:00 I was back home, in the barn mucking out and rearranging fence panels to accomodate a hay delivery. Managed to drop a 75 ton wooden gate onto my ankle. In retrospect it was maybe more like 50 - 75 lbs.

By 11:30 I had finished supervising the hay delivery, made small talk about the holiday season with my farmer, paid the man, and hauled a new 50 lb trace mineral salt block into the barn. Managed to not drop it on my ankle.

By noon I was seated uncomfortably on a metal folding chair in a stinky gymnasium crowded with 2 million (give or take) 11 - 14 year olds. I had a sick child (one of my own) on my lap. Turns out she really was on death's door after all. My bad.

By 1:45 my eyes got all misted up when my 14 year old dtr missed a word in the spelling bee. The word was miscible. Miscible, really? Can you blame her? Anyway, this was her last chance as she's an 8th grader now and that's the upper limit. She's come in 2nd the last few years and she really wanted to win this one and go on to the county competition. Alas.

By the time I got home from the bee, my ankle was in agony. That gate I dropped on it? It did some damamge. It was all swollen and I couldn't walk without crutches. But my sister the nurse got me all set up with wrapping and elevating and medicating and icing. Then she and her husband went to Rosie's play while I watched her little boy. I had help, though. Two teens who adore him followed him around, played with him, fed him, even changed his diaper. I was set.

So yeah, that fame and fortune had me settin' on my couch with my legs propped up, icy Diet Coke in hand. Not too shabby, huh? My 15 minutes of fame.

Just When I Thought That I Was Out, They Pull Me Back IN.

We were ready for the first day of school.

Sooooo ready.

Projects and assignments done.
Backpacks loaded with supplies.
Laundry washed, first day outfits selected.
Contracts, forms, lunch menu selections completed and handed in.
Teachers met, schedules received.

Ready.

My quota of how many arguments I could hear, how many disputes I could resolve, was filled. Stick a fork in me. I was done. Well done. Burned to a crisp done.

But we had only hours to go till bedtime on First day of School Eve. I would make it, even if I was crawling to the finish line in tatters.

And then.

The dreaded automated phone call from the school's dean of students:

"Good evening parents of Mwah-Mwah Charter School. Due to transportation concerns and power outages, school for Monday, September 29th, has been cancelled."

Do I have your sympathy? Thank you.
Do I have your vote? Yes? Thanks so much. Just one little click of this brown button is all it takes.

Summer State of My Soul

Soul-Feeding
Take the kids to the county fair. Watch tenderly over them as they eat cotton candy, ride the ferris wheel, pet the cows, win an arcade prize.

Soul-Depleting
Listen to them whine when told they can't have five more dollars for an impossible-to-win arcade game or get the enormous plastic cup of over-priced beverage instead of the small paper one. Watch as half of the arm-and-a-leg-food gets thrown out because they're too excited to eat.

Soul-Feeding
Watch as the kids splash and play in the crystal clear waters of our pool.

Soul-Depleting
Moan as we scrub the algae off the pool floor for the bazillionth time because something in the pool's innards is busted and this pool business has become an all-work-and-no-play venture. The upside is I'm fairly certain that if we jumped in now, we would emerge with some sort of super powers.

Soul-Feeding
Turn my face to the warmth of the sun, feel the sand in my toes. Hear the laughter of my children, hear the bells of the ice cream man, hear the pounding of the waves.
Remember growing up here.

Soul-Depleting
Curse myself when the badge checker caught me unawares. Squirm in discomfort as we sit in the car covered in sand and salt. Deal with sad faces and whiny voices when I proclaim that this trip will be only about the beach and not about souvenirs or mini golf.

Soul-Feeding
Pick a red tomato off the vine. Exclaim with surprise at the size of the cucumber my child just found under all the vines. Smell the basil. Smell the mint. Tie up the cherry tomato branches that were wandering everywhere. Marvel at the bounty.

Soul-Depleting
Pull weeds in my sleep. Feel the shame as I watch a dog-walking neighbor eyeballing at my sad little garden. Make a note to self that perhaps next year I should plant it somewhere out of sight to passers-by.

Soul-Feeding
Feel my heart soften as I watch Sunny follow Patrick everywhere and gaze at him with worship in her eyes. Melt as I look at the sofa and see a tangle of children and dogs sprawled out in a cozy heap, melding into one another.

Soul-Depleting
Yell and stomp and chase a soaking-wet-just-returned-from-a-dip-in-the-radioactive-pool-puppy off the couch. Sigh as I see dog hair in every corner of every room. Cringe as I fork over the cash at the pet store for yet another bag of hamster-dog-cat-coackatiel-rabbit-whatever-food.

Soul-Feeding
Rejoice that there seems to be markedly decreased bickering among the kids.
Rejoice in finding some quiet time to write, to read.
Rejoice in finding some quiet time.

Soul-Depleting
Charge myself with being a bad parent for not imposing screen restrictions this summer. Verbally abuse myself for allowing them to rot their brains almost unchecked as they sit on the couch enjoying FB, computer games, x-box games, texting, TV.....

I guess every good thing comes with a price.

And Now The Work Begins

Three days away with my girls.
Then four days away with the whole fam-damily.

Good times, good times.

But now the work begins.

The bottom and sides of the pool resemble a kiwi in color and texture.

The landscaping around the pool and the rest of the house? Nothing short of tropical. Though to drive past the rows upon rows of corn withering in their fields in NY state, this seems to defy the laws of nature, whatever they may be.

There are weeds taller than I am. Weeds choking out flowers, choking out trees, wrapping their tendrils around pool chairs to pull them back into the thick tangle and never be seen again.

They frighten me.

There are weeds in my vegetable garden, too. At least the ones around the pool patio and growing around the foundation of the house I can spray evil poisonous weed killer on in the hopes of chokng them out. Not so in my veggie garden. Nope. I've gotta pull all those bad boys up BY HAND thank you very much. Course, if I had done things right the first time and laid ground cloth down between the rows, I wouldn't have had this problem. But nooooooo. I left that step out and now I'm cryin' the blues.

I've also got dog poo out the wa-zoo (catchy little rhyme, no?).
The dogs, for some reason, decided while we were gone that it was just too much trouble to walk alllll the way to the back yard to leave their deposits. They've changed things up a bit and are now pooping all over the white stones surrounding the deck. So I spent the better part of my morning picking up the dried up poo from the four dogs we left at the house while sweat literally poured from my face, nearly blinding me in the process.

So my first day back from vacation was non-stop fun, between unpacking, doing laundry, pulling weeds, spraying weeds, scrubbing the pool, picking up poo, and running kids to appointments.

I'd like to say I need a vacation, but it's just too much work.

Will you vote for me out of pity? Just click the brown button (like dog poo) and you've automatically voted.
Thanks. I feel better already.

Farm Friday

Still not done building the Hen House so I can move my chickadees to the barn proper, their permenant home. They're getting cramped (read, smelly) in their Chick Shack. And they're just about fully grown. In fact, the most recent bag of feed I bought them was a layer mix, instead of the Start and Grow they've been on the last four months. My babies are getting all growed up. Sniff.

But I still have much to do before I can move them....
Build the gate,
Add three more boards to the sides,
Chicken wire over the rafters up high,
Add chicken-wire covered plywood to the back wall,
Add the bedding and the feeders and the grit hopper and their waterer and their kiddie-pool-filled-with-sand-and-DE-dustbath.

In other words, almost done.

Why is it I just can't seem to get out there and finish it all up?

Is it perhaps that I had to spend hours in the barn the other day undoing the damage Finnegan caused when he accidentally locked himself in the soon-to-be hen house and ripped out all the chicken wire separating hen house from rabbit pen and letting the bunnies loose? (Run-on sentence much?)

Is it because I have to run a kid to summer school every day and kids to various and assorted appointments roughly 40 times a week? (OK, that figure may be slightly exaggerated.)

Would it be that I had to plan and pack for a mini-vacation (girls getaway for me and m'girls) followed immediately by planning and packing for a whole-family vacation the very next day?

I know it isn't because I'm too busy taking care of the landscaping. The way the weeds are growing up around the place you'd think we were on the books somewhere for a demolition.

Hmmmm. Mayhaps it's the supervising of the summer homework my kids have been assigned, including the reading of about a dozen books, a few math packets, chapters from history books, projects for the assigned readings, etc.

Or it could be just all the other "normal" stuff in my life like making sure the kids are doing their chores, checking on the status of the wild feathered and furred critters that chance into our lives, oversight of the 40+ "domesticated" critters under our care, grocery shopping, laundry, and feeding my children now and then.

Why can't I finish this project? No clue.

Ponder, ponder, think, think.....

When I figure it out I'll let you know.

In the meantime, good news.

My next farrier appointment is coming up

Wait for it.....

In TWO WEEKS.

I will try to sneak a few photos.

Pushing Me Off the Cliff of Insanity

Fred came home early on the 4th.

Came home early to a wild-eyed woman with crazy hair. A woman ranting about how her kids were pushing her off the cliff of insanity with their mocking, their hitting, their teasing, their sharing-challenged ways.

Me They've been driving me crazy all morning. I can't have more than one in a room at a time or it spells disaster. I'm running out of rooms. By the way, hello. Nice to see you made it home early.

Random Girl Child Mommmmmmmm, he LICKED me!

Me THERE WILL BE NO LICKING OF THE SISTERS!

Fred Boy, I guess you can take the girl out of the south, but you can't....

Me Don't even.

Some Other Random Girl Child Mommmmmmmmm, I was sitting in the good spot but then I got up and then HE took it and it's not even his DAY and.....

Me Don't take your sister's good spot!

Fred Like I was saying.

Me Hush.

ME again Anyway, listen, I have to go to the store for a quick trip. I'll be taking a few of them with me. And I'm exhausted, just to let you know. I have NOT been sleeping well lately. Killer insomnia.

Fred Why don't you take some of that prescription you have for it? That always helped.

Me I don't have any more. I haven't had any in awhile. Haven't needed it. For some reason I haven't had problems sleeping in a looooong time. I don't know why.

Fred For how long, do you think?

Me I don't know. For about 9 or 10 months maybe?

Fred And you can't make that connection? How long were the kids in school?

Me Oh.

Fred Listen, why don't you go to the store without the kids? Have some quiet time to yourself.

Does my man know how to pamper me or what?

Me That does sound good. But I already promised a few of them they could come along. Do you smell that? That's their money burning through their pockets. They are answering the siren's call of the candy and magazines.

Me Come on guys, who's coming with me?

5 kids (1 not even mine)MEMEMEMEME! I call shotgun!

Me No, you can't have shotgun, today is Monday. That means it's Patrick's day but he's not coming, so it goes to the Saturday person, which is Julie.

Several kids at once But that's only her day for reading for shotgun she gets Tuesday which is Bella's day but that was before Bella could sit shotgun, which she can now, so Julie shouldn't get Tuesday anymore she should get some other day but not Saturday because That's Not Fair so James should get shotgun for Saturday but That's Not Fair b/c he has a friend with him so he should sit in the back with him which means Daniel should get shotgun but he's not going so Rosie should get it but That's Not Fair!

Someone shoot me.
Please.

First Day of School, First Day of Summer

The kids finished school last Thursday, so yesterday was the first Monday of summer break.

And since Bella takes summer school (now fancily called "extended school year"), today was her first day heading back to school. Poor thing, her backpack didn't even need dusting off.

But she has a great attitude about school and she marched merrily off.

The rest of the day, the beginning of our first full week of summer, didn't feel a whole heck of a lot different.

I still had a kitchen to clean up, tasks and chores to assign and supervise, grocery shopping, running the kids to dentist appts and friend's houses, weeds to pull, flowers to plant, mulch to spread, laundry to do, kids to yell at.

I also discovered a recipe for iced coffee from PW that looks mouth-wateringly delightful. So I started that last night and it steeped all night and this morning I'm going to strain it and chill it and I'm all ashiver with giddy anticipation for the finished product.

I'll let you know how it turns out. But I probably won't share.

Unless maybe you help me pull some weeds ....

Know what? I will give you free yummy PW iced coffee. But only if you vote for me. My ranking is slip slidin' away. I'm in the stinkin' 20s, gross! Please help me move back up by voting every day. Please? Thank you. Slurp.

(Summer) Break of Insanity

Just 3 1/2 school days remain.

Then they will be ....
released.

[Twitch]

I used to love summer break.

And I'm not just talkin' about my own distant childhood. I mean I truly and thoroughly enjoyed when my kids were home the entirety of the summer.

The last few years I've been clinging to my old phrases like a child clutching a security blanket.

I could hear the words coming out of my mouth:
"I love summers" I'd say.
"No alarm clocks. No after school activities. No homework, no projects to oversee. No papers to sign, no field trips to chaperone. Just endless days stretching together. Warm sun, the pool, the beach, fireflies, watermelon...."

All spoken while wearing the grin of a simpleton.

But nowadays

[twitch]

when I begin to think of my kids being home
all day
every day

[tremble]

my teeth begin to rattle ever so slightly, and a thin stream of drool leaks from the corner of my mouth.

Oh there are plenty of good times. Many a Norman Rockwell-worthy picture of my kids riding bikes, drawing chalk pictures on the driveway, playing basketball, fishing in our pond, swimming in the pool, laughing with friends. Eating corn on the cob, watermelon. Picking cherries from our trees then gobbling them down and spittin' the pits.

But then there are...

the dark times.

The times they bicker. They whine. They yell and fight and glare. They make faces, argue about whose turn it is to do what, whose turn it is to sit where, who ate their last water ice, whose drank the last of the iced tea and didn't make more.

She's wearing my shirt, he pushed me, she smells bad, are you ever planning to wash your hair, it's my turn to ride shotgun/to pick the radio station/to have a friend come with us to the movies. He broke my goggles, he rode my bike without asking, she's sitting in my spot, she had a friend over last time, it's my turn, it's mine it's mine it's mine.

[cower in corner and suck thumb while eyes glaze over]

And I know nothing really works. Suzy Sunshine Mom makes an appearance for a while with grand ideas about arts and crafts, daytrips and pool games.
But then she blows it with her sing-songy motivational team-building speeches for a cooperative work-together attitude for all the pool-cleaning, weed-pulling, house-cleaning, grass-mowing things on the to-do list.

Then the whining kicks in and Nurse Ratchet Mom moves in. She tries to control the situation with her steel glint, her even tone, her drama-free temperament that is never shaken.

But the kids beat her the hell out of our house and on her heels storms in Roseanne Barr, screaming at the kids, commanding them, out-whining them.

I like Roseanne.

Forget Nanny 9-1-1, who's got a direct line to Roseanne? Mary, my celebrity sister? Do any of your people know any of her people? I would even be tempted to trade in my invitation to see Mr. Clooney at the premier if I could get Roseanne to move in with us for a couple weeks to whip my little b@#*&^ into shape.

D-R-A-M-A-T-I-C

I was playing Scrabble with Rosie and Julie last night.

What should have been some nice, relaxing quiet time with a couple of my girls was anything but.

At any given time I had at least three people asking me something, telling me something, complaining about someone. The puppy was running around willy-nilly and I was trying to keep an eye on her so she didn't pee, chew, eat our little dog Cindy or get out the door.

I also had an eye on the clock b/c I needed to go pick up my oldest from a party, and oh yeah, there was dinner.

About the third round of the game I found myself yelling at a good two or three of the kids simultaneously to "JUST BE NICE TO EACH OTHER!"

It was right about that time Rosie played her word.

Dramatic.

No, I'm not painting the scene here, people, that was the word she played. Dramatic.

That sucker was worth 28 points when you figured all the double word and triple letters and what-not, and then she got a 50 point bonus for using all seven of her letters.

78 points!

About that time I looked up at the clock and said, "Well, whaddya know, time to leave to get Patrick."

We did resume the game when we got home.

Guess who won?

Smarty pants.

Party Pooped

James had a party yesterday. Kind of an end-of-the-school-year thing. So I had seven or eight boys over
what, am I supposed to have an exact count of how many kids I'm responsible for or something?
all of whom are 15 - 16 years old. Not including my own two 16 yr old boys and my nearly 12 yr old son.

In addition, Rosie had a couple girls over. So we had my three 13 yr old girls, plus another two. Said girls are all blossoming, and I'm not just talkin' about their personalities.
Said girls were all in two piece bathing suits of varying degrees of skin exposure.

Do the math. (10) 15 - 16 yr old boys, + (5) 13 yr old girls. Bathing suits. Pool.
Equals.

A lot of playing musical chairs for me.

There were times they were all in together, and I was pretty much right there poolside with an eagle eye.
Other times we used the pool by turns. Especially once the sun went down and they decided night swimming sounded like fun. And the hot tub.

Separate but equal, that's my motto.

You watch a movie, you go in the pool.
You go play football, you go in the pool.
You eat some pizza, you go in the pool.

And on and on like this most of the afternoon and evening.

I'm pooped.

I'm party pooped.

And I know it's only going to get worse over the next couple of years when the boys are 18 (and 14) and the girls are 15.

Yikes.

I'm gonna needs me some shotgun.

2 - 12

2:00
Picked up Daniel from school.
Drove over to our other school to pick up Julie and four of her friends for her belated birthday party.
I now have my 11 yr old son, plus five 11 - 13 yr old girls in my car. The girls all immediately begin whipping out cell phones and texting with blinding speed.
All except two: Julie, who asks me for mine so she can follow suit. She doesn't have her own yet but rushes to tell her peers she'll be getting her very own cell phone when 6th grade is over. They kind of sigh in relief. And her friend L, who sits morosely and stares at her thumbs lying lifeless in her lap. She has to wait till her birthday. In August. Collective gasp of horror and looks of pity come from the other girls, who understand that August is a lifetime away.

3:00
Five 11 - 13 year old girls change into bathing suits and jump into the pool.
Two 13 year old girls sit in the bathroom with me as I play nurse, trying to give a lesson in matters feminine so they can join the others in the pool. There are books involved. There are demonstrations and gestures that would make Vanna White proud.
Two 13 yr old girls change into bathing suits and gingerly make their way to the pool to join their friends.

4:30
Seven 11 - 13 year old girls, still wet from swimming, sing happy birthday to Julie. She blows out her candles before we finish singing, then looks up, sheepishly, to explain that she forgot to wait and make a wish. Everyone laughs and finishes the song anyway.

5:30
Seven 11 - 13 yr old girls belt out songs at the top of their lungs as we drive down the road. Windows are open b/c the spilled milk from two days ago still smells like a possum rotting in the Louisiana sun. But nobody seems to care.
I cringe as they scream out pop music lyrics, including but not limited to:
sex in the air, I don't care I like the smell of it
whips and chains excite me
first I'll disrobe you, then I'm gonna probe you
fill me with your love, inject me with your poison
abduct me, I wanna be your victim

I try in vain to educate the girls to the objectification of women but no one's listening so I give up.

6:00
Seven girls carefully select the best seats in the theatre, hold out their paper bags for me to fill with popcorn, and giggle incessantly while they wait for the show to begin. The lights from the screen flicker across their faces in the darkness of the theatre, creating the illusion that they are little girls whose feet don't quite touch the floor. I would never dare share this with them.

8:30
Sit patiently at our booth at Friendly's.
Help girls make their dinner selections.
Try to keep the noise level down.
Play tic-tac-toe and hangman.
Tell them no more inhaling the helium from the balloons.
Tell them no more than two to the bathroom at a time.
Tell them to let go of the drama over the attitude of one of the girl's boyfriends.
Tell them to stop texting each other when they're sitting right next to each other.
Tell them to finish their dinners.
Tell them to say thank you.
Tell them to finish their ice creams.
Tell them to buckle up.
Tell them to open their windows.
Tell them those lyrics are awful because blah blah blah....

11:30
Give reminders about Dorito crumbs in the bedroom.
Give reminders about noise levels after midnight.
Give orders about no sodas.
Give hugs.
Give smiles as the girls tell me this is the best birthday EVER!

12:00
Fall into bed and let exhaustion do its thing.

Spring - love/hate

I love spring.

Her greenery pulls me from my winter slumber.
Her flowers and unfurling leaves fill me with hope.
Her warm breezes swirl around me as I lift my face to the sun.
All around me is beauty: daffodils, forsythia, tulips, little mint green leaves, lush grass.
New life: nests full of baby birds, bunnies frolicking and cavorting, colts with the sun on their backs running for sheer joy, puppies rolling tumble-bumble through the grass.

My mind is alive with possibilities.

I hate spring.

Her endless list of chores overwhelms me.
Her unfurling weeds fill me with dread.
Her warm breezes bring stink bugs.
All around me there is work to be done: eliminating weeds, planting the flowers I bought before they die in their flats, watering the flowers I planted before they die in the garden, tilling the vegetable garden and nourishing it with fertilizer, buying and planting the veggies, finishing the chicken coop in time, tidal wave of end-of-the-school-year paperwork.
New life: trying to protect the foolishly placed nest of baby bunnies from our dogs, the onset of the costly seasonal battle against fleas and ticks, waging war against intestinal worms in puppies, goats, horses, saving the baby birds that have fallen from their nests.

My body is bent and sore with exhaustion.

Farm Friday

So the weaning process is still ongoing. And Mama and son are both doing well. Some crying and pacing, to be sure, but they're dealing.

But doing things this way does mean more work.

I have to pitch hay out to Genevieve since she no longer has access to the barn.

I (meaning my kids) have to haul buckets of water out to refill her water tub, because the hose won't reach that far.

And I have to milk her every now and then.

**cricket cricket **

I said I have to milk her every now and then.

See, her udder is still producing milk, it just has nowhere to go. So after a day of no 800lb baby slurpin' down his breakfast, lunch and dinner, the milk just builds up till her bag is tight and uncomfortable.

So I milk her just a bit to take the pressure off. Just enough to make her more comfortable. Plus this will fool her body into thinking that's all the milk she needs to make, so it will start to produce less on the next go round.

But B the Younger was helping me feed her a couple mornings ago when he saw me reach up under her belly and start yanking on her teats.

Uhhh, Mom....?

Yes dear?

What are you doing?

I'm milking Genevieve.

Why?

(See above)

He just watched with a mixture of horror and fascination for a minute, then shook his head and walked back to the house.

I think I need to add this to the chore list!!! I can just see their faces now when they discover that their weekly chores might include emptying the dishwasher, mowing the lawn, and milking the horse.

Oh, this is brilliant. I gotta go. I need to find my dry erase markers and start making some changes on the chore board.

Caution: Shallow

Sometimes I just don't know why I write.

I read the headlines. I listen to the news......

Osama bin Laden has been shot.

Tornadoes kill hundreds in the south, destroy everything for countless victims.

Tsunami in Japan. Nuclear reactors eeking radiation. Thousands dead.

And then I sit down to write about ....

My chickens?
Hamsters?
A sassy child?
A long church service?

Does it ever all just seem so pointless to you?

I close my eyes and put myself in the shoes of someone who has just lost everything. Or lost a loved one. Or I try to understand the emotions of a woman who lost her husband, or a child who lost a parent on 9/11...

I am filled with the feeling of being so small, so insignificant. So helpless to bring real aid or comfort to those in need.

Of course, we contribute to disaster relief aid. After the tsunami, B the Younger took up a collection of his siblings' charity money and brought a jug to school to collect more and he ended up getting about $150. We will add to that and send it to the Red Cross. And I know we will help with donations to the victims of the tornadoes, too. But ....

Is it ever enough?

Pocket change and prayers. That's all I got.

And my prayers can't be all that helpful the way my mind works....

Dear God, please help all the people who suffered losses during the tornadoes. Especially any mothers who have lost children. I can't imagine losing a child. I can remember it like it was yesterday when I brought my first-born home. Now he's in high school! And I love him so. But I wish he would get his head in the game with his homework or he'll never get into college at this rate. Did he turn in that last lab for his chem class? Did he finish his math homework?

I mean the tornadoes! Help the victims of the tornadoes! Rebuild lives! Find lost family members! Shelter, food, water!

And dear Lord, please help heal the hearts of the people who have lost loved ones in the attacks on 9/11.I remember I was in MOMS Club when that story was unfolding so many years ago. So awful...Hey I wonder whatever happened to Sherry from MOMS Club? The one with the kid that was always picking his nose? I'll bet he's nearly S's age by now. Wonder if he's still picking his nose....

I mean, help the victims! The survivors! Closure, peace, justice!

Dear Jesus and all the saints in heaven, please help all those poor people who are still struggling over in Japan to contain the radiation and rebuild all that was knocked out by the tsunami and the earthquake. The pictures of that wave rolling in were just horrific. It's amazing what the force of water can do. Like the bank on our pond. We keep fixing it but then the water finds its way under or around the dam we've built and erodes the bank even more. I know F is going to need to get out there with his tractor soon to try to fill in some of that area. Hope his tractor starts right up for him, sometimes it gives him trouble. It makes that weird noise like that woman at auditions on American Idol. I wonder who will be going home this week on Idol?

No, no, no! Tsunami! Reactors! Earthquake! Victims! Help!

Amen.

Maybe I'd better stick to that pocket change.....

Two New Notches on My Overalls

I could stretch things and save this post for Farm Friday, but I've got nothin' for today.

No reserves in creativity either, so I'm making do with this.

"This" being that we have two new pets.

That's right. Because we didn't have enough.

Please give a warm welcome to our hamsters Fizzy and Dizzy.

It began innocently enough on Friday afternoon. I took the girls and James out on a few shopping errands. We had a nice dinner out at Boston Market and then went by the pet store for our last errand: buying some small goldfish for our ponds.

As luck would have it, they were out of goldfish.

As luck would also have it, we had to walk past the warm furry pets to get to the cold scaly pets.

And of course, we walked right past a cage with little black and white hamsters sitting up on their hind legs looking for all the world like prairie dogs scoping their surroundings.

Adorable?

We asked the nice man to take one out.

We asked the nice man to put her back so we ould talk things over.

Three of the four kids wanted one. As in each. To be kept in their rooms.

I did my best to talk them down.

I told them to forget the 3 - 5 years life expectancy the nice man mentioned. More like 2 for a hamster. They were setting themselves up for more heartbreak.

I told them they would need to clean the cages themselves. They would need to fill the food and water dishes. They would need to handle them with care. The cute little hamsters could possibly bite if they were handled too roughly or not with enough frequency or if the mood struck them.

They would have to pay for them themselves. This little prerequisite knocked one of the kids out of the running as she had just blown through about half her allowance on junk at Five Below.

But the other two, James and Julie, still had cash burning a hole in their pockets from the nice people who gave them gifts for completing their church sacraments.

So much so that Julie even decided to spring for a new cage, though our attic probably has enough critter cages to start a small zoo.

So we grabbed a cart and started loading it up. How much stuff could two pocket rodents possibly need? The cage, 2 bags of bedding (b/c James wanted blue and Julie wanted confetti), food, water bottles, wood chews, little houses, treats, hay, and an exercise ball.

There was no room left in the cart for the actual hamsters.

But somehow we managed, and we got our new pets home and settled into their new digs.

The kids were disappointed when I told them they had to wait till the next day before they could handle their new pets so they could have some time to acclimate, but they made it. And last night they took them downstairs to hold and love and cuddle. And in the process of so doing, they lost one.

Yeah. Someone was holding one of them and she got freaked out when she started climbing up her arm and then she dropped her and then she was on the sofa and then behind the sofa and then under the sofa and the kids were frantically running around searching for their new lost pet and plugging up the air conditioning vents and in general just freaking out.

Oh the joy of being a small critter in our household.

And of course I was blissfully unaware of any of this b/c I was on the road picking up one of the other kids from a party.

But they found her and returned her to her cage before I got home and all was well with the world.

I don't hold out much hope for them. Better start saving the shoeboxes now.

Meet Fizzy. Julie's hamster. Got cute?

You know, I'm betting when most people get asked,
How many pets do you have?
they're quick with an answer.
2
they might say. Or maybe even
3.
Or if the person being asked is borderline crazy, the reply could be something like
7.

Me? I'm beyond normal.
I'm beyond borderline crazy.
I probably fit more into the category of hoarder, because I don't actually KNOW how many animals I have unless I stop to count them out.

Let's see, I have....

(5)I have our dogs Sunny, Sophie, Cindy, Blue and Annabelle.
(3) Our cats Mamfy, Mali and Punkin.
(2) Toad 1 and Horny Toad.
(2) The new arrivals Fizzy and Dizzy.
(1) Nick the cockatiel.
(4) Hermit Crabs I don't care to know the names of.
(2) Rabbits Alice and Minnie.
(6) The goats Elfie, Frex, Tibbit, Crope, Ozzy and Houdini.
(3) The horses Genevieve, Pippin and Finnegan.
(14)Our chickens Tizzy, Goldie, Puddin', Chicken Little, Miss Peggy, Elizabeth, Earnestine, Ting, Bam, Big Mama, Mamin, Nugget, Pox and 1 more I can't remember the name of.

Looks to me like that's 42. Is that correct? Someone check my math please.

Yep. Definite hoarder.

Please click the brown button. Not 42 times. Not 7 times. Not even thrice or twice. Once. Just once.

Calling Social Services

Rosie: Do I have to cut up any more of this potato?

Me: Tomato.

R: Yeah, tomato. Do I have to cut up any more?

Me: Cut up the whole thing, babe.

R: Why are you making me cut up the whole thing? I don't even like tomatoes. I'm pretty sure this would be considered child abuse.

Me: Hang on, I'll get the phone so you can call social services.

Me: James, come empty the dishwasher, please.

J: Aww Mom. I don't want to.

Me: Oh, well then. If you don't want to then never mind. I'll do it.

J: Really?

Me: No.

J: Vwy I even have to empty it? You should empty it, it's your job.

Me: I don't think you want to go there, son.

J: It is your job. You have nothing else to do. You should do all the chore stuff. You don't do anything.

*This while I am in the middle of cooking dinner, signing school papers and cleaning a mess off the kitchen counter.*

Me: Well as long as you think I don't do anything, I guess that's exactly what I will do.
Julie, you can stop cooking the meat, James is going to take over cooking the rest of the dinner tonight.
J, when you're done emptying the dishwasher, you can go ahead and refill it, because that's something that I was going to do. But as long as I'm now not doing anything, you can do it for me.
When you're done filling the d/w, I want you to finish browning the meat and while you're doing that you can butter these rolls and then cook the corn and finish the salad.
Of course, when dinner is over, you can clean up and put away all the leftovers and wash out the pots and pans.
Then I guess you can walk yourself the two miles to CCD since I won't be driving.
It's Bella's turn for reading tonight, so don't forget to make time to read with her just before bed.
She should also put some laundry in tonight, so be sure to fold and put away the towels from the dryer, then switch the washer load over to the dryer, and make sure she gathers all her laundry and sorts it correctly. She may need help getting the detergent down.
After that you can oversee that people get their medicine, brush their teeth, take their vitamins, and go to bed on time.
Next, set up the coffee for the morning.
After that you can put the dogs out, put Sophie and Cindy away, and lock up all the doors and turn out the lights.

I'll be sitting back and enjoying all the nothing like I usually do.

J: VWAT?! I'm not going to do all that, are you crazy?! Vwat you think I am, slave or something? I am NOT doing all that work.

Me: You have a choice my friend. Either you do all my work tonight, or you hand your phone over. What's it going to be?

J: VWAT? I'm not giving you my phone!
Grumble, grumnble, grumble....

Starts to load dishwasher. Begins to look around the kitchen at plates and silverware being gathered, meat cooking, salad being cut up, stove getting dirtier by the second.

Walks away from half-loaded d/w and gets phone. While staring at the floor with eyebrows furrowed, hands me the phone and walks away in a huff.

Call ME a slave?

I think not.

Easter Madness

So I left off hinting that we had a slightly chaotic Easter weekend. It wasn't bad, really, just too much going on and not enough time to squeeze it all in. But somehow we did. The only day that was truly a challenge was....

Saturday
My friend Mary and I filled I don't wanna know how many dozens of plastic Easter eggs with I don't want to know how many pounds of sugar. Yes, the sugar was in the form of cute Easter candy like egg bubble gum and pastel-wrapped Reese's peanut butter cups and little foil wrapped chocolate bunnies and all, but honestly it would have been more to the point to just dip each plastic egg into a giant vat of granulated sugar. Certainly would have been cheaper.
Started some of the food prep work for Easter dinner, like slicing strawberries, baking the cake, etc.
Sent about 7 or 8 of the kids outside to play while Mary and I got the stuff ready to dye the 5 dozen eggs I had boiled the day before.
As we were nearing readiness for the troops, in they started running, all yelling,
"James got hit in the eye with the softball!!!!"

Sure enough, in walked James, caboose of the Mayhem Train, bleeding from his eye. Well, not his eye, but right at his eyebrow. And it was bleeding pretty good, too. We guided him to the kitchen sink so he could bleed into that while about 25 hands started thrusting papertowels and ice towards us. And between James' best friend, Mary and myself all standing directly in front of James and each vying for the position of chief cook and bottle-washer, things were getting a bit crowded. And just plain nuts.

Finally someone got Fred who surveyed the damage and decided it would need stitches or glue. He had some old Dermabond (which is basically Crazy Glue for skin) but it was old and crystallized. It would not do. We found some Crazy Glue knock-off and he was thinking about using that but then heard where he could get his hands on some of the Real Thing and off he jetted to pick it up.

So we bandaged an ice pack to J's forehead and went ahead with the egg-dying. Sorry, but the day's schedule left no wiggle room. Head injuries be damned, the eggs would get dyed.

And dye them we did. Followed by Fred getting back in time to glue J's eyebrow back together just before dinner.

As you can see from the picture, there are more hands involved than there needs to be. I'm counting at least four.

But, bottom line is, J's eye got fixed, the eggs got dyed, dinner got eaten. So far we were on track.

Next up was the service for James' and Julie's initiation into the church. They had been going to CCD for awhile, coupled with much whining and complaining, but their education on matters of the church was deemed complete. They were to receive the sacraments of baptism, communion and confirmation during the Easter vigil mass on Holy Saturday. I had been assured that the vigil mass was absolutely beautiful, though a bit long. I was told to expect an hour and a half for the mass. Maybe two.

Since I rarely possess the courage to get my brood through even a one hour mass, that was cause for some angst on my part. But I swallowed the lump in my throat and agreed. What choice did I have, after all?

So after dinner we presented James and Julie with their gifts of some rosaries and mass books and statuettes and the whole crew got dressed up in their church clothes, which took me all day to round up and wash and (wink) iron.

The kids looked beautiful. Even James with his swollen and glued eye. My angels. And off to church went Fred and I, plus J and J, with the rest of the crew to follow later (rest of the crew meaning 3 of our guests, the rest of my kids and my sister).

Poor kids were both pretty nervous. James hid it well but Julie kept going over and over how to hold her hands for communion
(left over right) Like this, right?
(right over left) No,no, like this! Right?
(left over right again) Aaah! Like this!
And trying to remember her responses
Me (playing priest): Body of Christ
julie: And also with you. No! I do. NO! Amen.....Right?

Finally, at 8:30, the sun had set and it was time to begin. The priests and the deacons and the entire congregation filed outside to the bonfire. Candles were lit, ancient words were chanted by the men in white robes.
Fred said if only we had a few goat entrails we'd have ourselves a nice Druid ceremony.

Back inside the dark church we filed again, this time with our candles providing the light.
Because I needed to worry about my boys and fire.
But the CCD teacher was right, it was beautiful. The priest sang the entire opening of the mass acapella. Sang for a good 10 minutes. Like Gregorian chants.

Beautiful...
Lovely...
So peaceful....

OK, we need to move along here, people.

And move along they finally did. At a snail's pace. If said snail were oozing its way through a chalice of Holy molasses.

A typical mass will have two readings, generally each followed by a responsorial hymn, with the homily bringing up the rear.

This was no typical mass. There were 9, nine, NINE readings, each followed by a responsorial hymn.

And myself being a cafeteria-style Catholic, I'm more of a New Testament kinda gal. This was mostly Old Testament fire and brimstone stuff. Abraham binding his son and raising the knife till God cried "Psyche!". The parting of the Red Sea and the consequential drowning of the Egyptians. And we were singing about it!

The Egyptians sank like a stone, to the bottom of the seeeeeeaaaaa....
The water crushed all the chariots and charioteers and horses, till they washed up upon the shooooooore.....

We worship you because we fear you, and you cloak yourself in gloooooo-ryyyyyyyy...

I fought the strong urge to cover the ears of my children.

But at long last it was time for my children to be baptized and confirmed. We marched over to the font and I was waiting for the whole "Do you reject Satan and all his works?" line of questioning. Instead we got more singing. This time to all the saints in heaven.
Literally, ALL the saints in heaven.

Saint Agnes
Pray for usssss
Saint Anthony
Pray for ussssss
Saint Ignatius
Pray for usssssss

Fred swears about 5 minutes into it he heard us ask a St Billy Bob to pray for us. He says there's no such saint but I just pray what I've been told.

But finally they reached the end of the line of saints and we proceeded with the ceremony. The kids made all the correct responses and they had water poured over their heads and Chrism oil applied to their foreheads and they donned their white robes and voila, they were Catholic.

Not many minutes later they went up for communion and Julie got her hands a little mixed up but the priest was kind with his correction.

Then, miraculously, at 11pm, it was over. Not an hour and a half. Not two hours. TWO AND A HALF HOURS! For James, Julie, Fred and myself, it was three hours as we had to arrive early.

I mean honestly, couldn't the nice priest just have waved his magic wand and said a few things in Latin and made the sign of the cross to all corners of the earth or something equally holy and mysterious? Three hours we were there.

But to remain positive,
no one strangled any of their siblings
my boys did not set the church on fire
bottom line, James and Julie have completed all their sacraments in one fell swoop
(though at three hours, perhaps not so fell)

Well, all sacraments except reconciliation.

Tune in next week for that one.....

Pray for ussss.... then click the brown button.
